I talk okay, but I write better.
This has pretty much been my mantra over the last few months, as I’ve jumped back into working full-time across multiple jobs after almost a year of sparse hours and spending a lot of time, well, doing other stuff. As an avid reader deeply involved in the bookish community, I spend an embarrassing amount of time online, writing reviews and sharing opinions across different platforms. But there’s this whole other part of my life that the friends I’ve made along the way rarely see.
I got the idea for an email thread from Lucia Franco, an author friend of mine who I worked for. I wanted to create a space where I could share everything with anyone who cared to listen.
Social media doesn’t always cut it. I don’t need another place to share the highlights or glamorize a few moments here and there. Instead, I wanted a space to share the awkward, the exciting, the overwhelming, and the mundane. My email list is essentially a monthly update of the everyday things that happen, with some exciting moments and maybe a few embarrassing encounters sprinkled in. It’s a way for me to talk about music, books, and to remind us all that life can be exciting no matter what we’re doing—and that it’s totally okay to talk about it.
Have you ever heard someone say, “It’s not that deep”?
Well, I think my brain works the opposite way. I regularly think, “What if it is that deep?”
Maybe it is. Maybe the normal things we get excited about are worth talking about. In the midst of all the craziness in the world, maybe someone does want to hear about the accomplishments and struggles of an average person. In my emails, I talk about all of it. From my favorite upcoming books to music projects I’m working on, the concerts I attend, and all the weird, silly, not-that-deep things that, hopefully, someone else will care about too.
